President Hugo Chávez Friday announced his government would increase National Armed Force (FAN) members' wages up to 60 percent.

For troops and cadets, the increase will amount to 60 percent. Noncommissioned officers and officers will receive a 50 percent rise in their pay. The decision will come into force as of next July.

President Chávez explained that the wage increase is one of the measures  taken in order to guarantee a "dignified" life for FAN members, such as housing and social security plans.
