Venezuela joins Spain and France in crackdown on drugs

The Venezuelan government is working with France and Spain on an agreement to use technology for drugs interdiction inside Venezuela, Minister of the Interior and Justice Jesse Chacón reported.

The senior official explained that two Colombian drug cartels operate in Venezuela -the Goajira cartel, to the West, and the Sun cartel, to the East.

The Sun cartel uses the route on borderline Apure state, to reach Southern Guarico or Northern Bolívar, where drugs are stockpiled. There, narcotics are taken across the states of Delta Amacuro, Monagas and Sucre to the West Indies, and finally to Europe.

Chacón thinks that drug traffic should be attacked in the route between North Colombia and central Venezuela, instead of the sea, as it has been the case so far.

Alternatively, the Goajira cartel uses Zulia and a portion of Táchira state to reach the central part of Venezuela, and send the drugs to the United States via Mexico, where there is plenty of cartels.

The minister estimates that next year the amount of seized drugs will increase as a result of the agreement with France and Spain. "A large amount of cocaine and some heroine go this way."
