Uribe ready to accept hostage asylum in Venezuela

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Tuesday endorsed again an asylum petition three Colombian politicians held hostage by FARC guerrillas have filed with Venezuela, and said his government is ready to ignore legal pitfalls regarding this request and allow for the operation.

Uribe ensured he backed such a proposal because he wanted to help achieve an agreement for humanitarian trade of hostages for rebels in custody, as the rebel Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) has requested.

Uribe therefore asked Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez for help and the Venezuelan ruler offered to help last weekend in Bolivia, AFP reported.

"I asked for his (Chávez') help on this topic and told him we should keep a permanent bilateral coordination regarding this issue," Uribe told radio network RCN.

Uribe explained he endorsed the asylum application because it does not entail "any serious risk for the nation," adding that his government is ready to leave legal controversies aside for the sake of the release of the people kidnapped.
