The sale of Spanish aircrafts to Venezuela, Cuban situation
and the new panorama in Bolivia were some of the issues Tom
Shannon, US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere
Affairs, addressed Monday with Spanish Foreign Affairs officials.
"They reviewed bilateral concerns in Latin America," Spanish
diplomatic sources told AFP on Tuesday.
When asked about the countries related to such "concerns"
Spain and US dealt with, the source conceded that they talked
about Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia, but he would not mention
them explicitly.
Washington move last January 13th to prevent Spain from selling
12 aircrafts to Hugo Chávez' government because they
comprise US technology is the latest chapter in US-Spain damaged
bilateral relations.
"In a region in so much need of political stability, the
actions and frequent statements of the Venezuelan government
are contributing to the regional instability," said Washington
in a communiqué announcing the US veto on the transaction.
US-Spain relations have been seriously affected since President
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero took office, as his
first move was to withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq.
