Panama wants to tighten up ties with Venezuela

The Panamanian government will strengthen economic, political and diplomatic relations with Venezuela and Russia, as part of a strategy focused on international cooperation, Panamanian First Vice-President and Foreign Minister Samuel Lewis Navarro said.

Lewis Navarro told local radio station KW Continente in a talk show that he would head an official delegation to Moscow, including business groups, following an invitation of the Russian Government, DPA reported.

Lewis Navarro pointed to the need of "looking forward" and exploring areas different from the United States -Panamanian major trade partner.

He mentioned Venezuela as a traditional partner in the cultural and trade areas. In addition, the official recalled that under ex President Mireya Moscoso, bilateral diplomatic ties dampened, but President Martín Torrijos is closing the gap.
