Mexican President Vicente Fox said both Venezuela and its
President Hugo Chávez were two issues he and his US counterpart
George W. Bush addressed during a meeting on Thursday in Mexican
resort Cancun.
"We talked about Venezuela. And voiced concern on whether
it is interfering and meddling in other countries. We talked
about the need to guarantee democracy in these countries,"
Fox told TV network Televisa, DPA reported.
Fox is taking part in Cancun in a tripartite summit including
the United States, Mexico and Canada. The Mexican ruler referred
to claims in Mexico that Chávez is meddling with the
Mexican electoral process to favor opposition leftist candidate
Andrés López Obrador ahead of the presidential election
next July 2nd.
The candidates for ruling party Partido Acción Nacional,
Felipe Calderón, and for Partido Revolucionario Institucional
(PRI,) Roberto Madrazo, argue Chávez is interfering with
Mexican affairs.
On Thursday, Fox told reporters that Mexico would not resume
ambassador-level relations with Venezuela as long as Chávez
does not apologize, DPA reported. The Mexican Government claims
the Venezuelan ruler should apologize for calling Fox "a puppy
of the empire."
