Caracas mayor threatens to seize a "whole municipality"

The swearing-in ceremony of the members of the Metropolitan Public Policy-Making Council, a discussion forum of city action plans, ended with oral attacks on Chacao and Baruta mayors Leopoldo López and Henrique Capriles Radonski.

"This is an election year, a year of confrontation. Welcome to democratic confrontation. Crackdown on crime!," Caracas Mayor and head of the Council Juan Barreto admonished.

Barreto advocated his "straightforward" seizure policy. "If there is need to expropriate a whole municipality, then we will do it. We will not play the game of a putrid middle-class represented by López and Capriles."

He briefed on the approval of an instrument to seize La Lagunita golf club in order to build a middle-class housing development. Additionally, he stated that a project to use La Carlota airport in Caracas has been prepared and will be discussed soon.

04:17 PM. Western Hemisphere. "Damned empire; I curse you one thousand times; some day you will be finished off and wrecked. I curse you one thousand times, empire." This is the least that President Hugo Chávez has uttered to refer to the US government. In urging the Bolivarian Armed Forces to prepare for war, he said that a US raid on Venezuela through Colombia would trigger and spread over the region "the 100-year war."
