President Hugo Chávez' Government is issuing identity
documents Islamic extremists may use to enter the United States,
according to a report disclosed Wednesday by a committee of
the United States House of Representatives, Mexican newspaper
Vanguardia quoted on its website.
The Venezuelan authorities "have issued thousands of identity
cards -which are equivalent to Social Security cards- to people
from places such as Cuba, Colombia, the Middle East, where
foreign terrorist groups are based," said the report, as quoted
by Notimex.
The Committee on Homeland Security of the Lower House
submitted a comprehensive paper quoting US Government officials.
The document notices the conclusions on crime and violence
activities on the south border between the United States and
Mexico. The report claims that the documents Venezuela has
issued "to people who should not obtain them" can be used
to apply for Venezuelan passports "and evnn US visas that
could allow the holder to avoid inmigration inspections."
The paper quoted as an example the recent detention on the
US-Mexico south border of a number of Pakistani citizens
bearing false Venezuelan identity documents. The report also
mentioned the statements of one George W. Bush administration
official to The Washington Times that President Chávez
has talked both to Iran and the Hamas government.
