Renewal of broadcasting license to Venezuelan RCTV subject to public debate

Hugo Chávez' Government will decide whether to renew or not the broadcasting license to local TV network RCTV following a popular consultation, said the Minister of Communication and Information Willian Lara after meeting with representatives of the so-called alternative media.

"The community media showed interest in promoting a democratic debate so that the Venezuelan people may express their opinion on whether the broadcasting license should be renewed to RCTV to operate a TV channel," Lara said, as quoted by Efe.

According to Lara, the final decision is in the hands of "the head of State, the cabinet, but we are suggesting that the people's voice should be heard, as expressed by alternative and community communication groups."

President Chávez recently hinted he had questions on whether the broadcasting license to RCTV would be renewed or not. Such license expires next March.
