Congress speaks up against high court "encroachment"

National Assembly (AN) deputies agreed unanimously to refuse the "unauthorized assumption of powers" by the constitutional court of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ).

AN Second Vice-president Roberto Hernández proposed the move following an amendment to article 31, income tax law, as he viewed it as overstepping the legislature incumbency.

The agreement reached sets forth the creation of a committee entrusted with enquiring into a number of claims made by AN members on alleged irregularities at the constitutional court.

The committee, including Calixto Ortega, Iris Varela and Freddy Rojas, among others, will be presided over by Deputy Roberto Hernández.

AN will urge also the Moral Power to define the responsibilities, not only of hearing justice Jesús Eduardo Cabrera Romero, but all of the seven judges at the constitutional court, as well as their potential removal.
