University students protest; police breaks up Unimet demonstration

National Guard officers shot pellets and threw tear gas canisters to prevent Metropolitan University students from going out the campus located in eastern Caracas.

Demonstrators intended to protest against non-renewal of a broadcast license for private TV channel Radio Caracas Televisión (RCTV).

Earlier, students of Central University of Venezuela (UCV), Andrés Bello Catholic University (Ucab), Simón Bolívar University (USB), Santa María University, Bicentenaria de Aragua (UBA), Eastern University (UDO) and Carabobo University (UC) fueled the protest.

About 11:19 a.m. government authorities did not clear the march towards Plaza Venezuela.

However, all the students planned to rally around 2:00 p.m. on Brión Square to protest the end of the concession for channel 2, which had 53 years of nonstop broadcasting.

From there, they would go to the head offices of the European Union (EU) and the Organization of American States (OAS). They intended to express their refusal to the government measure enforced Sunday night and which made the channel being off the air.
