Neutral Panama in RCTV case

While Panama advocates the right to freedom of expression, it will keep its neutral stance at the international level, even in the face of non-renewal of a broadcast license for private TV channel Radio Caracas Televisión (RCTV), said Panamanian First Vice-President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Lewis Navarro.

According to the Vice-President, Panama may not meddle in Venezuela's internal affairs. The Venezuelan government has been invited to the 37th ordinary session of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held in Panama City, on June 3-5, DPA reported.

The government of Panamanian President Martín Torrijos "has shown its commitment to freedom of expression and human rights in general," the senior official told a foreign correspondent during a press conference.

However, he noted, "this does not mean that Panama or any other country may act as a judge and find out whether the enforcement of internal regulations in foreign countries involves violation of human rights."
