Students block highway to rebut end of broadcast of RCTV

A group of high school students Tuesday blocked Prados del Este highway, southeast Caracas, to reject President Hugo Chávez government's decision not to renew the broadcast license for private television station RCTV.

Henrique Carriles Radonski, Mayor of Baruta Municipality, called upon the students to prevent the rally to develop into a clash with the Caracas Metropolitan Police (PM) and to hinder normal traffic in the area.

Young students with high schools San Ignacio de Loyola, Merici, Mater Salvatoris, Jefferson, Champagnat, Cumbres, and Los Campitos staged the protest.

Rosella Bachelet, mother of three young demonstrators told reporters: "The only thing the boys and girls want is respect for the principles of freedom, equality and fraternity, Mr. President. We do not want to be shut up or handcuffed. We want to live in democracy and peace. Stop trying to divide us, please."

University students joined the high school demonstrators.
