Students to demonstrate for 182 minutes in Morelos Square

Students who gathered in Brión Square, Chacaíto, north Caracas, started marching for Morelos Square, in front of the Ombudsman's Office, where they mean to stay for 182 minutes, i.e. one minute for every student arrested over the last three days of demonstrations following non renewal of the broadcast license for private TV station RCTV.

The students said they are handing a paper to Ombudsman Germán Mundaraín asking for respect for the right to demonstrate peacefully, and calling for protection of demonstrators. They are also urging the Ministry of the Interior and Justice to reconsider the use of police corps to suppress student demonstrations.

Some 440 officers with the Caracas Metropolitan Police (PM) and a number of National Guard officers are posted near the Ombudsman's Office.

Officers with the Directorate of Police Intelligence Services (political police Disip) are accompanying the march, and a helicopter of the Metropolitan Police is flying over the area.

Stalin González, president of the Central University of Venezuela's Federation of University Students' Centers, was called by Vice-Minister of Security Tarek El Aissami to tell him they had no authorization to march over Morelos Square. However, demonstrators claim they have.
