While broadcasters operating AM radio stations are convinced
that their licenses will be renewed for 20 years as of May
27, 2007, the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel)
intends to extend the licenses for five years only.
Eliú Ramos, Finance Vice-President of the Venezuelan
Chamber of Broadcasting (CVIR), confirmed this information.
"We have information, based on the national average and considering
the moves in connection with television station (the licenses
granted to open signal TV channel) that renewal will be for
five years."
"Under decree 1577, issued in 1987, broadcasters were given
preferential rights for license renewal for 20 additional
years."
