Unesco: No country is free from illiteracy

Replying to the report "Figures show that Venezuela did not get rid of illiteracy," which daily newspaper El Universal published on July 1st, the Chief of Unesco Press Relations Section Sue Williams, clarified she did not make the statements disclosed in such report.

In fact, because of a mistake in editing, it was not clarified that such remarks were taken from website www.vcrisis.com, where Williams told Aleksander Boyd that Unesco has not certified the eradication of illiteracy in Venezuela.

In her letter to El Universal, Williams said: "Regarding illiteracy indices, I can confirm Unesco neither has declared nor will declare any of its member states free from illiteracy. However, it does acknowledge the progress made."

Further, Williams added that in 2005 the number of illiterate people in Venezuela was 1,166,409.
