During the second session held at the Nacional Assembly (AN)
to discuss the changes to the Constitution advanced by President
Hugo Chávez, Deputy Ismael García, for pro-government
Podemos party, jumped in defense of the people's right to
elect directly their local governors.
He was making reference to the geographical overhaul and
new positions for public servants under the draft amendment.
García suggested that the "heads of government" of the
new jurisdictions should be elected by the people.
Podemos leaders have criticized the election "at will of
public servants" promoted by President Chávez.
"We are defending the right to elect. Then, who is the sovereign?
The sovereign is not an official, but people."
