Two intellectuals yelled at each other during the Universal
Forum of Cultures held in the Mexican city of Monterrey due
to their opposing views on Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
Spanish journalist Ignacio Ramonet and Peruvian economist
Álvaro Vargas Llosa, the son of Peruvian writer Mario
Vargas Llosa, took part in a debate entitled "Is capitalism
good for the poor?"
During the debate, with the participation of more than 300
people and aired on the Internet, author Mario Vargas Llosa,
who took a seat in the front row, made no comments, Efe reported.
The discussion escalated to shouts when the economist termed
fascist the government of President Chávez. This comment
irritated Ramonet, who told him that he knew nothing about
fascism.
"Chávez' regime is heading for fascism," said Vargas
Llosa, unleashing the applause of part of the audience.
He added that Chávez turned out to be a dictator who
amended the Constitution to remain in office. He noted, also,
that the broadcasting license of the major TV network was
reversed because of criticism and opposition to his government.
