Chávez denies claims that the military put pressure on him

President Hugo Chávez Tuesday denied claims the Military High Command put pressure on him to accept the results of the referendum on his proposed constitutional reform held last December 2.

"I do not take pressures from any general. On top of that, at this moment, for the first time, all of the members of the Military High Command were my subordinates in the past."

Chávez's remarks came during a phone call to La Hojilla television show -broadcast on state-run TV channel VTV- to dismiss press reports that he refused to accept the electoral results and was pressured by the military.

Chávez explained that Sunday afternoon the Military High Command was deployed nationwide, particularly in Sucre state, where "the governor went nuts."

"They want to make me look like a tyrant who accepts the electoral results only when under pressure of some military officers."

Bases of discord

04:17 PM. Western Hemisphere. "Damned empire; I curse you one thousand times; some day you will be finished off and wrecked. I curse you one thousand times, empire." This is the least that President Hugo Chávez has uttered to refer to the US government. In urging the Bolivarian Armed Forces to prepare for war, he said that a US raid on Venezuela through Colombia would trigger and spread over the region "the 100-year war."
