Daily newspaper stops circulating on lack of imported paper

Regional daily newspaper Correo del Caroní Tuesday announced it would cease publication as of Wednesday amidst government restrictions preventing the company to purchase US dollars to import paper from Chile, amidst stringent exchange controls.

In a press release, the daily newspaper explained it would stop publication "as the government of President Hugo Chávez has denied US dollars to Dipalca, which is known to be corporation importing the Chilean newspaper paper we have used exclusively to print this newspaper for years."

"Senior government officials have launched a long and aggressive economic campaign against Correo del Caroní, but this does not mean they can claim the victory over the honesty and dignity of the Venezuelan people."

Correo del Caroní, however, vowed not to disrupt their commitment to keep the Venezuelan people informed, and announced their edition could be read on their official website, DPA reported.
