Uribe disavows any Chávez's future mediation with FARC

Colombian President Álvaro Uribe reasserted on Friday that the Colombian government has no plans to back his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chávez to mediate again with the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) in search of a humanitarian swap.

Reference was made to a request by Chávez to France's President Nicolas Sarkozy to continue taking part in the efforts to release Ingrid Betancourt. The Colombian ex candidate for president is also a French citizen and was kidnapped in February 2002, DPA reported.

President Uribe will meet next Monday in Bogotá with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner. At Sarkozy's request, they will discuss the issue of the swap of FARC hostages with imprisoned rebels.

Chávez and Colombian Senator Piedad Córdoba acted as mediators last August-November. However, the Colombian government dismissed them by arguing that they had showed "lack of prudence" and made "method errors."
