The Union of South American Nations (Unasur), the charter
of which was signed last May in Brazil, could admit as members
the nations comprising the Caribbean Community (Caricom),
reported on Thursday a high-ranking official.
Guyana's Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodriguez explained
that a clause of the agreement initialed by the 12 South American
member nations of Unasur leaves open the possibility of access
for Caricom countries, Efe reported.
Rodriguez made the remarks one day after Guyana's President
Bharrat Jagdeo said that his country had insisted during the
Unasur summit on the potential incorporation of remaining
countries in the hemisphere.
Guyana and Suriname are the only two countries of Caricom
located in South America and members of Unasur.
