Ortega estimates Venezuelan aid at USD 200 million

During a year and a half in office, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has executed economic and social development projects exceeding USD 200 million that were not estimated in his country's budget, and were rather funded by Venezuela.

On the occasion of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's visit to Nicaragua to commemorate a new anniversary of the Sandinista revolution, Ortega explained the investments made with these funds. The Nicaraguan opposition claims that the money should have been accounted for in the budget, to ensure proper management.

The Nicaraguan ruler said that out of the USD 200.5 million spent so far, USD 40 million were invested in subsidies for public transport in order to keep fares as low as possible. Transportation rates have heightened significantly amidst climbing oil prices.
