Venezuela's Hugo Chávez arrived Wednesday in the former Soviet Republic of Belarus to meet with President Alexander Lukashenko and discuss energy and military cooperation issues.

"With our friend, President Lukashenko, we have witnessed improved cooperation between Belarus and Venezuela," Chávez said at Minsk airport upon his arrival, AFP reported.

The Venezuelan ruler said his country intends to double trade and economic cooperation with Belarus.

During this working visit, both leaders are expected to talk about military and energy cooperation. In the past, Venezuela and Belarus have signed several agreements related to energy, mining, technology, agribusiness, petrochemicals and gas.

Both countries already established a joint venture to certify and develop Venezuelan crude oil reserves in the Orinoco oil belt.
