Chacao Mayor Leopoldo López gave on Wednesday a press
conference where he said that upholding the decision of the
Comptroller General Office to bar over 100 Venezuelans from
political practice would mean a great blow to democracy.
López urged the judges of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice
(TSJ) who are to decide over the legitimacy of the action
to correct, in his opinion, a human right abuse and a violation
both of the Venezuelan Constitution and the Inter-American
Convention on Human Rights.
The mayor remembered that the Inter-American Court of Human
Rights on Tuesday granted a complaint made by him last March
4th against the ban. That same day, he noted, Mercosur made
an opinion on the issue of political ineligibility and announced
a special commission to Venezuela in order to query about
the subject.
He claimed that the Venezuelan case has gone beyond the borders
and it is a question of preserving the Venezuelan democracy
health.
