Adriana Peña, the president of Mercosur Human Rights Commission, landed on Wednesday in Maiquetía airport in order to start an investigation into the issue of political ineligibility following a complaint filed by Chacao Mayor Leopoldo López.

"I came to work according to the duties and responsibilities vested in my position," said the parliamentarian. She reported also that additional members of the commission, including a Paraguayan delegation, would arrive in the evening.

She said that the arrival of Brazilian and Argentinean parliamentarians had not been confirmed yet.

In any way, she said, "we, at the Commission, will hold a meeting in Montevideo to try to define our move from now to next Tuesday."

She clarified that they were not biased or had taken sides with anybody. "The point at issue is that we came to listen to all the parties. While multiple international institutions have issued their opinions on the matter, we have come without preconceptions."

Peña reported that they had sent letters to the Comptroller General and members of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) to approach them and listen to their version of events.
