Mauricio Funes, the candidate of the Farabundo Martí
National Liberation Front (FMLN) for El Salvador presidential
elections, rejected claims that Venezuela's Hugo Chávez
would have an influence on his government in the event that
Funes wins the upcoming March 15 election, reported La Página
website.
Salvadorian opposition sectors have accused Chávez of
electoral interference in El Salvador. They argue that the
Venezuelan ruler has supported the FMLN candidate. These complaints
have been rejected by Wladimir Ruiz Tirado, Venezuelan Chargé
d'Affaires in El Salvador.
"In the same way that I will not meddle in Venezuelan politics,
the Venezuelan government will not meddle in our internal
affairs," Funes said in a speech before the members of the
Council of Professional Associations in El Salvador (Capes).
