Arrival of Mirage fighters donated to Ecuador is delayed

Western Hemisphere
The arrival of three of the six Mirage-50 aircrafts made in France and donated by Venezuela to Ecuador, scheduled for Monday, has been delayed by the lack of permission to fly over a country whose name was not revealed, a spokeswoman of the Ecuadorian Air Force told AFP on Tuesday.

"The planes were scheduled to leave on Monday (to Quito). But they have not been able to fulfill the plan because the permit to fly over a country was not obtained," the source said without specifying which country had not given permission to fly over its territory. The airplanes are flown by Venezuelan military pilots.

He said that the aircrafts were expected to arrive in Quito at noon. The Ecuadorian Air Force is celebrating its eighty-ninth anniversary.

On Monday, Venezuelan President, Hugo Chávez, confirmed that the Mirage-50 "were flying" to Ecuador.

Bases of discord

04:17 PM. Western Hemisphere. "Damned empire; I curse you one thousand times; some day you will be finished off and wrecked. I curse you one thousand times, empire." This is the least that President Hugo Chávez has uttered to refer to the US government. In urging the Bolivarian Armed Forces to prepare for war, he said that a US raid on Venezuela through Colombia would trigger and spread over the region "the 100-year war."
