IACHR to discuss Venezuelan situation

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) begins on Monday its 137th period of sessions

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will begin on Monday, its 137th period of sessions. During the public hearings, the Commission will address the situation of human rights in Venezuela.

The sessions will include the only two private hearings of the period, on freedom of expression and democratic institutions in Venezuela. Groups of the South American country have also requested two additional public hearings on human rights and criminalization of protests, Efe reported.

The IACHR, an autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), will be hearing, Friday, November 2, 54 cases, as requested by governments and human rights groups of 18 countries.

Among other issues, the Committee will hold hearings about freedom of broadcasting in the region.
