Venezuela's food basket price stood at USD 484.93 in December 2012, 4.83% above the figure recorded a month earlier (USD 462.57).

The president of the National Statistics Institute remarked that the increase did not represent a major impact on households as the legal minimum legal income (including both minimum wage plus food benefits) stood at USD 698.60 by December 2012," a press release states.

The rise in price was reported in wheat (27.4%), tomato (23.11%), hen eggs (12 units, 13.03%), onion (12.5%), chicken (12.09%), pre-cooked wheat flour (7.96%), sugar (6.13%), and coffee (5.74%).

Is protest over?

That political protest in Venezuela has lost momentum seems pretty obvious: people are no longer building barricades to block off streets near Plaza Francia in Altamira (eastern Caracas), an anti-government stronghold; no new images have been shown of brave and dashing protesters with bandanna-covered faces clashing with the National Guard in San Cristóbal, in the western state of Táchira; and those who dreamed of a horde of "Gochos" (Tachirans) descending  in an avalanche to stir up revolt in Caracas have been left with no option but to wake up to reality.
