NGO Venezuela Awareness regrets that Venezuela has taken a seat at the UN Human Rights Council, "considering its double standard, since it fails to respect or make reforms intended to meet the minimal requirements as a country that observes human rights. On the contrary, it furthers deteriorates and violates human rights as it pleases."

The human rights advocate based in Miami labeled as "gibe" the election of Venezuela. "In order to take on the position to which it was elected today (Monday), Venezuela should be stricter in terms of respect of human rights. Therefore, today's election can be just seen as a gibe. Any presentation to be made by Venezuela in its incumbency at the UN Human Rights Council is not at all trustworthy."

At first she agreed that I use her real name, that she had no problems with that at all. After all, living with HIV had driven her to help others – as a workshop facilitator giving talks and conducting seminars, or as a volunteer for local AIDS Service Organizations like Acción Solidaria (Solidary Action) and Mujeres Unidas por la Salud (Women United for Health, or Musa), a support group network for HIV-positive women. But when we were well into the interview, the realization that she might lose her private health insurance coverage made her change her mind.
