Safety operators at Maiquetía international airport evacuated the site of international flights due to the fumes that covered vast areas as a result of a fire.

According to the user information service, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the luggage conveyor belts, particularly at Gate 22. The aeronautic fire brigade made great efforts to control the situation.

Twitter users reported from the outset that the event began in the areas pertaining to Santa Bárbara Airlines and American Airlines.

For his part, Luis Graterol, the airport director general, explained that the focus of the fire was located in the administrative areas, on the basement, of an airliner. In view of the large amount of smoke that reached the international terminal, authorities proceeded to the preventive eviction of users.

Parking lots were also approached by the fumes and morning flights were delayed. Operations in the domestic area were running as usual, Graterol clarified.

The event started after 10:30 am.

Travelers are advised to contact their air operators to check the departure time of their flights.
