Chávez's candidates win 20 governor's offices; dissenters obtain three

The ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) on Sunday won 20 governor's offices, compared to three obtained by the opposition Unified Democratic Panel (MUD), as announced by Tibisay Lucena, the chair of the National Electoral Council, who read the first official report of election results.

The MUD candidates won the governor's offices in the states of Lara (northwest), Miranda (central north) and Amazonas (south).

Pro-government candidates won in the remaining states.

Lucena informed late on Sunday that the results in Bolívar state (south) indicated that ruling party candidate Francisco Rangel Gómez had obtained 43.57% of the votes against 42.34 won by opposition leader Andrés Velásquez.

Notwithstanding, Velásquez has so far rejected the results announced by the CNE and asserted he had obtained a "clear and clean" victory.
