Venezuelan Vice-President Nicolás Maduro expressed on Monday his gratitude to voters in the states of Zulia, Carabobo, Táchira, Nueva Esparta, Monagas, and Mérida for "breaking free" from "the bourgeois oppression" in the gubernatorial election held in Venezuela on Sunday. He added that the people "taught a lesson on awareness and determination to accompany (President Hugo) Chávez under any circumstances."

In the commemoration of the 182nd anniversary of the death of Simón Bolívar, the Liberator of Venezuela, the vice-president explained that parallel candidacies endangered the ruling party's victory. The leader urged Chávez's supporters to unite.
