Elías Jaua is the new Foreign Minister

Public powers representatives and pro-government state governors showed up

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez appointed on Tuesday Elías Jaua as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs. Jaua, in turn, thanked the president for "the new token of confidence."

The news was given by Venezuelan Vice-President Nicolás Maduro during the session at the National Assembly where he submitted the Yearly Report for fiscal year 2012. 

Venezuelan Vice-President Nicolás Maduro appeared at the National Assembly (AN) on Tuesday to introduce the government report for 2012.

The session was led by Congress Speaker Diosdado Cabello. The president of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), Luisa Estella Morales; Adelina González, the president of the Repubilcan Moral Council, and the president of the National Electoral Council, Tibisay Lucena, attended the event.

Turf wars over the mines

The El Perú police station, in El Callao municipality, south of Bolívar state, south Venezuela, came under sustained fire with more than 100 bullets smacking into its walls. According to police records, a gang of 15 gunmen identified as members of the so-called "mining unions" arrived on motorbikes in the evening of August 23 and began opening fire on the police station. They intended to get back a belt pack containing guns, bullets and memory storage devices.
