Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro asserted that Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez "is doing much better" and "recovering," Cuban official media reported on Monday.

"He is doing much better; he is recovering. It has been a tough battle, but he has shown some progress. We must heal him. Chávez is very important for his country and Latin America," Fidel Castro told local media on Sunday after he attended a school in Havana where he cast his vote, official newspaper Granma reported.

The Cuban leader also remarked that he is given "daily" reports about Chávez's health, EFE cited.

Hugo Chávez (58) remains in Havana since December 11, 2012, when he had his fourth cancer surgery. Chávez was diagnosed with cancer in June 2011.
