Nuncio Apostolic in Caracas Aldo Giordano is the one "monitoring" the situation in Venezuela, said the Vatican, which ratified on Thursday its willingness to "help" the country. However, the Holy See would not explicitly reply to the Venezuelan Government's invitation to take part as a mediator in talks with the opposition.

Vatican's Spokesperson Federico Lombardi told EFE he had "nothing to say" about the invitation sent on Wednesday by the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Pope Francis for the Vatican to act as a mediator in talks between the Venezuelan government and the opposition.

Caracas invited the Vatican's Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, to join talks in Venezuela as a bona fide witness in a dialogue to end the violence and confrontation hitting Venezuela since February.
